About shiatsu

Zen Shiatsu is a Japanese style of bodywork, similar to massage. It was first developed by Shizuto Masunaga and uses the meridian system of Chinese medicine.  A core understanding in Shiatsu is that sickness and imbalance happen when our vital energy (our ki ) becomes stuck or stagnant.  This is a normal occurrence that we all experience.  When ki is able to flow smoothly again along the energy channels of the body (the meridians), the body can move toward balance and begin to heal itself.

Finger, palm, elbow and knee pressure, as well as stretches and other techniques, are used in Zen Shiatsu.  Sessions are done fully clothed on a futon on the floor.  Accommodations can be made if needed.

Shiatsu is a good choice for treating injuries as well as common ailments such as stress, fatigue, chronic pain, digestive issues, respiratory problems, insomnia, headaches, and discomfort during pregnancy, among others.  Shiatsu is also very effective on an emotional level and is a holistic approach to bodywork

About me

I began my study of shiatsu in 2014 when I joined a learning community taught by master practitioner Shunji Morimoto of Wendell, MA.  I am inspired by Shunji and am grateful to him for sharing his wealth of knowledge and skill so generously.  I aim to bring the same compassion, deep listening, and joy to each session that I have learned from his example.

In recent years, I have broadened my study of shiatsu and have learned from other very talented practitioners as well, including Karlo Berger of Providence, RI.  I am currently a member of Moshi Moshi Shiatsu, a collective of practitioners that studies with Shunji and spreads our passion for shiatsu by participating in festivals and other community gatherings.  I am also a member of the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA).

My intention for each session is to help the receiver relax deeply and connect with their body's natural ability to move toward wellness.  My hope as a practitioner is to offer shiatsu for physical healing, as well as a path to nourish and transform our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the larger world.
